The Peterson Studio first opened its doors in the Fall of 1990. It has seen many changes over the years and has now found a permanent home in a studio at the Peterson residence. The studio is conveniently located within walking distance to town, shops, and the public library. It is equipped with a Steinway Grand Piano, a Yamaha acoustic piano, six full Yamaha keyboards, and seven student keyboards. The Studio is also equipped with Ipads and several computer software programs aimed at teaching ear training, keyboard harmony, theory and composition.
The Studio offers private lessons, private lessons with practice time, and group classes for all ages and levels as well as lessons in Early Childhood Music and Recreational Music Making for Adults and Sr. Citizens.
Maria Peterson, Director of the Studio, has studied at New York University and SUNY New Paltz and holds a B.S. in Music Performance as well as Music History and Literature. She has been teaching both private and group classes since 1982 and is a life-long performer. She is currently on the faculty of the Dutchess Community College School of Music as well as the Arts Community. In addition, she has served as the Music Director of the First United Methodist Church in Highland and is the co-founder and Director of the Highland Visual and Performing Arts Institute. She is a member of the Music Teachers National Association, the New York State Music Teachers Association, the National Guild of Piano Teachers and a participant of the New York State School Music Association.
Her philosophy is simple. She believes that everyone, despite age, ability or purpose is capable of learning to play the piano and deserves a complete musical education including technique, theory and history. Her goal is to develop her students to a point where they can be independent life-long learners and enthusiasts of music.

MUSIC APPRECIATION GROUP CLASS
This one hour class explores all aspects of music, including rhythm, note reading, ear training, keyboard harmony, sight singing, history, composition and ensemble playing in a relaxed, game-based group setting. Perfect for the home-schooled or remote only student who has flexibility in their schedule and a desire to enhance special-area content.
WUNDERKEYS PRESCHOOL PIANO PROGRAM
The Peterson Studio proudly offers the WunderKeys Piano for Preschool program. WunderKeys was developed to provide one-on-one piano lessons to children ages 3-4, and combines beginning piano skills with a foundation in math; creating connections that facilitate mathematical understanding in the future and a love of the arts! New preschool students will receive 2 free lessons! Please call the studio to sign up!
MUSIC STUDY AWARD PROGRAM
Now in it's 15th year, this program awards certificates in order to recognize completed years of study in two-year increments up to twelve years of study. These accomplishments are recognized by the Music Teachers National Association.
THE NATIONAL GUILD OF PIANO TEACHERS ANNUAL AUDITIONS
The Piano Guild is a division of the American College of Musicians, founded in 1929. Their goal is to encourage and establish goals for students studying piano. These goals give students direction and provide a measurement of progress. Students prepare a pre-determined number of solo pieces with corresponding technical elements and perform them for a Guild-appointed judge who evaluates their performance. Upon successful completion of the audition, a report card is provided for each student along with a pin designating their level and category. The 2021 Piano Guild will be held at the Lutheran Redeemer Church in New Paltz - dates TBD. For more information on the Guild please contact me, or visit their website at www.pianoguild.com.
ANNUAL PIANO RECITAL
The Recital will take place at the Robert Casper Memorial Highland High School Auditorium on May 14, 2022. Learning to perform is an integral part of learning an instrument. All students are encouraged to participate, however, it is not mandatory.
SUMMER MUSIC BLAST CAMP
The Peterson Studio offers a one week Music Blast Camp during the week of July 11-15, 2022. The camp runs Monday -Friday 9:00am-12:00pm. Although the camp is piano based, previous piano experience is not required. Activities consist of Dalcroze, Orff ensembles, rhythm, theory, music games, composing and music history/appreciation. Weather permitting, there are plenty of outside activities as well so sunscreen and sneakers are strongly suggested! There will be guest teachers and assistants depending upon enrollment. The cost of the camp and all materials is $250.00 for the week. Snacks are provided. Enrollment is limited so please contact the studio as soon as possible to enroll.
